 What are you wondering?

violin surrounded by question marks
If there is one thing I love as a teacher, it's anticipating and answering questions!

  • Are you a Suzuki teacher?
I am deeply committed to Suzuki's vision that music education can unlock the human potential in every child: “Music exists for the purpose of growing an admirable heart.” "We must educate from the inside." - Shinichi Suzuki I use a "modified Suzuki approach" in my teaching, meaning Suzuki plus more! By synthesizing various noteworthy methods and interspersing my own tricks of the trade, I offer students a comprehensive blend of expertise.
  • What are the GOLDBERG VIOLIN fees and studio policies?
BILLING SYSTEM: Decide on appropriate lesson length for student * Pricing information will be provided at that time I only bill for lessons taken - NO packages or contracts to sign Billing statements emailed every three months (March, June, September, December) * Payments appreciated within three weeks via cash or Zelle STUDIO POLICIES: Regular weekly lesson attendance / practicing required * Over the summer, my teaching schedule varies to accommodate camps, family trips, etc. For schedule conflicts, please notify me asap, but no later than 24 hours prior to absence * I will always try to rearrange lessons for scheduling problems due to doctors' appointments, school/extracurricular commitments, etc. * If less than 24 hours are given, or if a lesson is skipped accidentally, parents will still be charged for that date (emergencies/sudden illnesses excluded, of course!) Arrive on time, with all materials - I can't be as effective without your books, your shoulder rest, etc. Text me if student is running late - the lesson will still need to end at its regular time If student / parent is ill, please do not attend the lesson in person * Kindly cancel the lesson, or ask to meet virtually — online lessons are highly effective! (And I will notify you about germs on my end too.) I am always available between lessons to answer questions / provide further guidance * Please don't wait a week to ask what I can answer today!
  • Must parents read music? What is their role?
SUCCESS = TEACHER + STUDENT + PARENT If any part of the team disengages, everyone loses! MY JOB: Teach parents/students everything they need to know Absolutely NO previous musical experience is necessary! STUDENT: Commit to regular practicing PARENT: Communicate with me/support lessons at home Younger students: Parents attend lessons/become "helper teachers" at home Older students: Parents' role becomes more supportive; less hands-on
  • What ages and types of students do you teach?
I teach all levels and abilities: beginners + intermediate + advanced players Beginners can start as young as three (dependent on temperament and parental involvement.) Luckily, the skills you learn on the violin can last a lifetime!
  • What factors lead to success on the violin?
Consistency of practicing: DAILY practicing promotes muscle memory/mental focus! practicing goal per day = length of lesson (either 30, 45, or 60 minutes) per day regularity is more important than quantity (3 hours/day is NOT as good as 30 minutes/day for 6 days) Stay organized: create dedicated space for practicing all essentials (music stand, pencils, metronome, music, etc.) should be ready & waiting practicing area must be visible (out of sight = out of mind!) Parental support: although the type/amount of support varies, parental support is ALWAYS required if parents show that violin is a priority, then kids will respond accordingly Listen to violin music/attend concerts: one of greatest ways to learn is through osmosis pro tip: listen to music in the car
  • Where, when, and how long are lessons?
Lessons are held in the studio of my Northbrook home (where I live with my husband, two daughters, and two cats 🐈 ), and can also be held virtually, when appropriate. I teach on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Lesson lengths are determined by: student's age + playing level + ability to focus General guidelines: 30 min lessons- Suzuki book 1 45 min lessons- Suzuki books 2-3 60 min lessons- Suzuki books 4 + Meet Joey and Frisco!
